Trøndelag with Norway's first commercial grid battery

Press event about the online energy storage modules

The local power grid in Lierne is now receiving support from a large battery from Eidsiva to ensure sufficient grid capacity.

- Large batteries can facilitate power-intensive industries in parts of the power grid that otherwise do not have the necessary capacity. This is an exciting future solution that provides better utilization of the power grid, faster connection and can save us significant investment costs, says Oil and Energy Minister Terje Aasland.

Faster power connection for new business and industry
Industrial and commercial establishments require greater capacity than the existing power grid can often offer. Therefore, the queue at the grid companies for the establishment of power-intensive industry and industry in Norway is getting longer and longer.

Parts of the capacity challenges in the power grid can be solved by storing energy in battery systems, and moving energy in time to the times when it is most needed. The monopoly regulation of network companies limits the possibility of fully exploiting battery technology in the power grid. Eidsiva Energi has therefore developed the new Peak Shaper battery service:

- This is one of Norway's largest battery installations in the power grid to date, and the very first commercial grid battery that grid companies can rent as a service. We believe Peak Shaper will be able to become an effective new tool for network companies in Norway, as a cheaper alternative to network development, says CEO of Eidsiva Øistein Andresen.

Contribution to the energy transition
It is Norway's second largest online company Tensio that is Peak Shaper's first customer. The company has regional responsibility for the electricity supply to approximately 250,000 customers throughout Trøndelag. Tensio will now be the first online company in Norway to adopt a completely new tool for the online industry. By renting batteries from Eidsiva's new commercial venture Peak Shaper, large batteries are installed in the network structure and the need for traditional network development is postponed so that new consumption can be connected more quickly.

- Getting more capacity out of the power grid, without building more power grids, is something that all customers and the whole of society will benefit from. We are therefore looking forward to gaining experience from the use of mains batteries together with Eidsiva and Peak Shaper, says Head of Network Development and Network Strategy at Tensio Rune Paulsen.

The grid battery in Lierne has an installed power of about 1 Megawatt, and is located near the Jule industrial area in Lierne municipality in Trøndelag. Jule industrial area today has both housing and industry, but no more available capacity. However, requests for more access to power for the establishment of power-intensive commercial activities are expected. Eidsiva and Tensio will now initiate tests of the battery service and further development of the service.
