The companies will pilot large grid batteries for power support in the power grid.

The collaboration will investigate the use of energy storage with large removable battery packs as an alternative to reinvestment in the power grid. In the long run, this could give network companies a new rental service of batteries to ensure faster connection of customers.

- Traditional network development is both time-consuming and expensive, while at the same time uncertainty is linked to the future need for capacity in various parts of the electricity network. Energy storage through larger mobile battery packs can thus be a cost-effective and flexible solution for grid companies, says Eidsiva project manager Kine Ryberg Strupstad.

Investigating the rental model
Eidsiva now wants to investigate the commercial rental of larger battery packs in the power grid, where the grid companies are offered a fast and flexible rental agreement with regard to location, size and duration. The name of the service is Peak Shaper.

- Through the collaboration with Tensio, we can test and adjust our business model. This is how we want to build and develop a service that provides the greatest possible value for both Tensio and other online companies in Norway, says Strupstad.

The first grid battery is planned to have an installed power of about 1 Megawatt, and will be installed near the Jule industrial area in Lierne municipality in Trøndelag. Jule industrial area today has both housing and industry, but no more available capacity. However, requests for more access to power for the establishment of power-intensive commercial activities are expected.

Contribution to the energy transition
Against the background of the ongoing electrification and the increasing number of requests Tensio receives, we have to adopt alternative solutions to traditional grid development. Both to be able to connect customers more quickly and not least to make even better use of existing infrastructure. We see several areas where we believe a mobile energy storage could be an interesting and attractive solution, and look forward to this pilot together with Eidsiva, says Head of Network Development and Network Strategy at Tensio Rune Paulsen.

-Society and the online industry face major challenges in the ongoing energy transition. Through this initiative, Eidsiva will be a driving force for adopting new technology and business models to solve our social mission in new ways, says innovation director at Eidsiva, Torstein Sole-Gärtner.
